Sapta Lochani Tara

Handmade mineral pigments on canvas
Artist: Sudharshan Suwal

Description:
Tara, in her White Tara form, is known as a health and long-life practice. White Tara represents the fertile aspect of compassion. Her body is white and she sits in the full lotus posture on the moon and a lotus flower. In her left hand she holds the stem of a blue lotus of compassion, while her right hand makes the gesture of generosity. Tara is often called the mother of all the Buddhas. She represents the wisdom of the Buddhas. It is wisdom that is the mother of enlightenment.

White Tara may be easily recognised by her seven eyes: three in her face, two in the palms of her hands, and two in the soles of her feet. One of the most striking features of White Tara is her seven eyes. In Buddhist symbology, each eye of White Tara is representative of her omnipresent compassion and vigilance in protecting living beings from physical and spiritual harm. They symbolise her ability to see suffering in all realms of existence and her willingness to provide help wherever it’s needed. The seven eyes are potent symbols of her divine qualities of omniscience, compassion, and vigilance. They serve as reminders of her transformative teachings, her loving-kindness, and her ceaseless commitment to the welfare of all sentient beings.

Tara is the feminine counterpart of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. According to legend, Tara came into existence from a tear of Avalokiteshvara, which fell to the ground and formed a lake. Out of its waters rose up a lotus, which, on opening, revealed Tara. Like Avalokiteshvara, she is a compassionate, succouring deity who helps all living beings.  White Tara, in Tibetan Buddhism is the embodiment of enlightenment and encapsulates thel five key activities and wisdoms of the Buddha Families: pacifying, magnetising, enriching and wrathful actions, plus all-activities of protection.
